21st century
What's in store for our kids? Imagine a student starting kindergarten this year? What occupation will that boy or girl have 17 years from now? Chances are good that it will be in a field that is either just emerging or has yet to be created. So, how do we get our kids ready for the work of the 21st century? It's going to be about so much more than the "basics."
Imagine the future of the class of 2021...Don't get us wrong. We believe in reading. We believe in math. But we also believe in using digital tools to enhance learning in science, social studies, humanities, arts, civics, engineering, and all other aspects of learning. As a parent, ask yourself one crucial question. Who will your child be competing with for the jobs of the future? It may be with a girl from India, a boy from China, or someone from Slovakia. Are we getting our kids ready for this type of competition?
Learning in the 21st century must change. Our educational system was founded on the agrarian calendar and modified structurally for the industrial age. How does the system need to change to meet the needs of tomorrow?
What if we focus on the skills we deem will be important for our kids to possess?
- Problem-solving- mathematically, scientifically, socially, environmentally
- Communication- reading, writing, speaking, listening, presenting, composing, publishing, drawing, painting, designing, storytelling
- Collaboration- across geographic regions, locally, culturally
- Adaptability- flexible thinking, creativity, connecting, traveling
- Critical thinking- across media, between various forms of data, multiple layers of involvement
Empowering kids to develop these types of skills will allow them to compete in the future, no matter what that future will be!
"I am so pleased with our experience at Digital Kids World's Summer Camp! Kate and Brooke love to work on their digital projects and I am so proud of their hard work and creativity. The girls are learning new skills and having such a great time in the process. As an educator, I appreciate the way they inspire kids to create, while modeling problem-solving, collaboration and communication skills. Camp Imagine! is such a wonderful and unique environment to learn and create!"
